5 Mistakes People Make After a Total Knee Replacement

A total knee replacement can significantly reduce pain and improve quality of life, but the surgery is only the first step. Your recovery depends heavily on what happens in the weeks and months afterward. Here are five common mistakes that can slow progress and prevent patients from getting the best possible outcome.
  1. Waiting Too Long to Start Physical Therapy: Physical therapy plays a critical role in restoring motion, strength, and function after surgery. Delaying treatment can make it more difficult to regain range of motion and may prolong recovery.  Starting therapy early helps patients reduce stiffness, improve walking mechanics, and build confidence during the recovery process.
  2. Not Fully Straightening the Knee: Many patients focus on bending the knee but overlook the importance of fully straightening it. Lacking full knee extension can affect walking, standing posture, stair climbing, and overall function. Regaining both bending and straightening motion should be a priority throughout rehabilitation.
  3. Doing Too Much Too Soon:  While staying active is important, pushing too hard can increase pain and swelling.  Recovery is not a race. The goal is to gradually increase activity levels while allowing the body enough time to heal. Finding the right balance is key to making steady progress.
  4. Ignoring Swelling:  Persistent swelling can limit range of motion, increase discomfort, and interfere with muscle activation. Elevation, exercise, walking, and following your physical therapist's recommendations can help manage swelling and keep recovery moving in the right direction.
  5. Neglecting Strength and Balance Training:  A successful recovery involves more than just the knee joint. The muscles surrounding the hip, knee, and ankle all contribute to walking, balance, and daily activities. Building strength and improving balance can help patients return to normal activities more safely and confidently

The Bottom Line

Most patients can achieve excellent outcomes after a total knee replacement, but avoiding these common mistakes can make recovery smoother and more successful.

At Brentwood Rehab & Performance Physical Therapy, our team works closely with patients following joint replacement surgery to restore mobility, improve strength, reduce pain, and help them return to the activities they enjoy.
